JOB DESCRIPTION – Temple Beth Israel Director of Operations 



Function: The Director of Operations manages the administrative operations of the congregation in accordance with the principals, guidelines and objectives set forth by the Board of Trustees. She/he provides the day-to-day management of Temple fiscal and administrative affairs and has direct supervisory responsibility over all office, and building maintenance personnel. 



Relationships: The Director of Operations reports to the Board of Trustees through the President of the Congregation; is directly supervised by the Rabbi of the congregation; and works in close collaboration as part of the professional staff team along with the Rabbi, the Director of Congregational Learning, and the Director of Music. 



Qualifications 

The candidate will have: 

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in facilities operation, and staff supervision 

• A high school diploma is required; a college degree is preferred.

Principal Duties: Under the general direction of the President of the Congregation and in close consultation with the professional staff team, as well as other Officers and Chairs of the appropriate committees, the Director of Operations is responsible for assuring the performance of the following functions either personally or through his/her staff: 



Office Management: 

• Assist in hiring, training, supervising and evaluating all office and maintenance staff 

• In collaboration with the Finance officers, manage the administration of staff salaries 

• Supervise the daily operations of the Temple office 



Property and Equipment: 

• Schedule and supervise the maintenance staff to be sure that: the property is kept in a state of cleanliness, readiness and repair; maintenance help is available when needed; and rooms are set up properly for all events. 

• Provide administrative and logistical support for the smooth running of all Shabbat and life cycle services, High Holy Day services and festival observances. 

• Maintain property in good condition by arranging for necessary repairs, replacements, and maintenance, in collaboration with the Temple Facilities Committee. 

• Obtain competitive bids for services, projects and contracts, as needed 

• Develop and implement a schedule of preventive periodic maintenance 

• Monitor utilities usage and identify areas for improvement and corrective action 



Manage Temple Calendar: 

• Coordinate scheduling of activities for all Temple groups 

• Provide the administrative and logistical support required for the running of events 



Purchasing: 

• Serve as the central purchasing agent 

• Maintain all associated expenditures against the temple budget 



Public Relations/Communication: 

• Act as an advisor and assist with all Temple publications (e.g. bulletin, mailings, directory, website, social media) 



Membership: 

• In collaboration with the Membership Committee, assist in providing initial contact with prospective and new members, offering information on services, programs, etc. 

• Maintain accurate membership records which reflect all pertinent data of member households 



Rentals: 

• Oversee the rental of the facilities to members and the community at large which includes, but is not limited to, the development of rental contracts, collections, and staff scheduling 

• In collaboration with the Facilities Committee develop, implement and enforce Temple policies regarding caterers; photographers; musicians who provide services within the Temple building 



Temple Records/Archives: 

• Oversee the maintenance of Temple records, e.g. membership data; newsletters; meeting minutes; and all historical and archival records. 



This is a full-time position that may require evening/and or weekend work.
