Mensch Academy is Mishkan Chicago’s take on inspired, down-to-earth Judaism for kids and families. At Mensch Academy kids build character, confidence, curiosity and a sense of who they are as Jews in the world through engaging in serious Jewish learning, prayer and exploration. Respecting each person’s mind and spirit, Mensch Academy is a space where kids feel loved enough and safe enough to take risks and experiment with Jewish tradition, making it their own and becoming the best versions of themselves. 



Mensch Academy seeks a creative, nurturing, open-minded, and responsive educator for two cohorts. Our 1st-3rd grade cohort meets on Tuesdays from 4pm - 6pm, and out 4th-6th grade cohort meets Wednesdays 4:00-6:00pm. 



Timing: 

Approximately 20 hours per week with required availability on: 

• Tuesdays from 1:00-6:30 

• Wednesdays from 1:00-6:30 

• 10 additional flexible hours throughout the week, working independently and working with the Mensch Academy Director



Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

• Serve as lead educator at Mensch Academy for our 2 cohorts, 1st-3rd grade and 4th-6th graders 

• Collaborate with the Mensch Academy Director on developing the curricular theme, and creating materials 

• Plan, implement and write lesson plans that align with the curriculum theme, and the established mission, vision, and core values of Mensch Academy. 

o These lesson plans will be responsive to student ideas and comments, and are not based on a set curriculum or text book. This means that lesson plans will not be written more than 1-2 weeks in advance, in order to fully respond to the insights and experiences of the students. 

• Document children’s progress 

• Create and facilitate Hebrew learning games and activities 

• Cultivating community with parents, children and staff, creating a warm, nurturing environment for the children, and collaborating with staff members.   



Required: 

• A minimum of 1 year of previous experience teaching or working closely with children ages 6-10 as an educator/counselor (camp, youth groups, elementary or religious/Hebrew school classroom teacher, day school teacher, etc.) 

• Dedication to teaching and experience working with children 

• Ability to read and understand Hebrew 

• Experience learning Jewish texts 

• Passion for Judaism and Jewish education 

• Experience and desire to work in a collaborative and experimental learning environment. 

• Ability to work as a part of a teaching team 

• Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral, written and interpersonal) 

• Fluent in creating and organizing files in Google drive 



Preferred: 

• Familiarity with Responsive Classroom 

• Familiarity with Project Based Learning 

• Ability to read and decode Jewish texts in the original Hebrew/Aramaic
